Why Does Only One Nostril Get Clogged When You’re Sick? A Simple Explanation

You’re lying in bed with a cold, trying to breathe, and it feels like only one side of your nose is working. The other side is completely blocked. You roll over, and a few minutes later – the clogged side opens up and the other side closes. What’s going on here?

The Nasal Cycle: It’s Normal

First, a surprising fact: your nostrils are never both working at full capacity. Your body naturally cycles between them every few hours. One nostril does most of the breathing while the other one rests. This is called the nasal cycle, and it happens whether you’re sick or healthy. You just don’t notice it when you’re well because the congestion isn’t there.

When you’re sick, the blood vessels in your nose swell up to fight the infection. This swelling combined with the natural cycle means the “resting” nostril gets completely blocked while the working one stays somewhat open.

Why Rolling Over Helps

Have you noticed that when you lie on your side, the nostril facing down gets more blocked? That’s gravity at work. Blood pools in the lower side of your body, including the blood vessels in your lower nostril. This causes more swelling. Roll over to the other side, and the pattern reverses within a few minutes.

What You Can Do About It

If the one-nostril thing is driving you crazy, here are some things that actually help:

Saline spray or rinse: A saline nasal spray or Neti pot can flush out mucus and reduce swelling. It’s a temporary fix, but it works.

Elevate your head: Sleep with an extra pillow under your head. Gravity works against you less when you’re more upright.

Steam: A hot shower or a bowl of hot water with a towel over your head can loosen things up fast. Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil if you have it.

Nasal strips: Those adhesive strips you put across your nose physically pull your nostrils open. They look silly but they work.

When to Worry

One-sided nasal congestion that lasts for weeks after your cold is gone – especially if it’s always the same side – is worth mentioning to your doctor. But if you’re in the middle of a cold? This is totally normal. Your body is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do.

So next time you’re stuck with one clogged nostril, know that you’re not alone, and there’s a perfectly good reason for it. Roll over, use some saline spray, and give your body time to fight off that cold.
